Well pump replacement and repair in Marion County

Low pressure, no water, or a pump that runs and runs. How Florida separates pump work from well work, what published guides say repairs cost, and when a new well makes more sense.

Signs the pump or tank is the problem

HomeGuide lists these as common signs that a well pump needs attention:

  • Lower water pressure, or low or no flow.
  • Faucets that spit, a sign of air in the lines.
  • Cloudy or sandy water.
  • Odd noises from the pump or tank.
  • Higher electric bills as the pump works harder.

It puts a typical well pump’s life at 10 to 15 years, and pressure tanks at 10 to 15 years. A pump that old is a likely suspect, but a failed pressure switch or tank bladder can cause some of the same symptoms for much less money, which is why a diagnosis comes before a price.

Pump work versus well work under Florida law

Florida’s well statute defines construction of a water well to exclude the installation of pumps and pumping equipment, and defines repair as altering or replacing any part of a well except the portion above ground. In practice that splits the job in two:

  • Pump, tank, switch, and above-ground piping: Generally outside the well construction permit. Ask the contractor whether any local plumbing or electrical permit applies.
  • Casing, liner, or anything else below ground: A repair under the statute, which needs a well permit. In Marion County that permit comes from the Florida Department of Health in Marion County.

Florida law lets licensed water well contractors install, repair, and modify pumps and tanks under the plumbing section of the Florida Building Code. If the diagnosis turns up a casing problem, a licensed water well contractor is the one who can do that repair.

Published repair and replacement costs

WorkPublished national estimate (checked Oct 2026)
Submersible pump, installed$1,000 to $2,500 (HomeGuide)
Jet pump, installed$400 to $1,400 (HomeGuide)
Constant pressure pump, installed$2,000 to $5,000 (HomeGuide)
Pressure tank replacement$500 to $1,000 (HomeGuide)
Pressure switch$25 to $100 (HomeGuide)
Typical pump replacement, all types$973 to $2,822; average $1,897 (Angi, updated Aug 2026)

HomeGuide says a pump swap takes about 3 to 6 hours, longer for a deep or hard-to-reach well. Depth matters because a deeper well needs a longer drop pipe and a stronger pump.

When the answer is a new well

Sometimes the repair is not worth it, or the well cannot be saved. Florida treats a well whose use has been permanently discontinued, or one in such disrepair that continued use is impracticable, as an abandoned well, and plugging one is permitted work for a licensed water well contractor, just like drilling a new one. If you are weighing repair against replacement, ask for both prices in writing. Our well drilling cost guide covers the new-well side.

After any repair, test the water

The Florida Department of Health lists a handful of counties with local rules requiring tests on newly built or repaired wells. Marion County is not one of them, but the department still recommends testing a private well for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year.
